Three Musketeers of Theology - Scripture, Tradition, Culture

Theology can helpfully be understood as a three-way conversation, a trialogue, involving Scripture, Tradition and Culture. It is important to understand how Scripture, Tradition and Culture can combine to deepen our understanding of some of the core beliefs that form the very heart of our Christian faith.

Since the earliest days of the Christian church, believers have confessed their faith using the ancient confession 'Jesus is Lord' (Romans 10:9, Philippians 2:10-11). When a person makes that confession, he is making some staggering claims about the person of Christ. On the one hand the believer is declaring personal allegiance to Christ as the Lord and ruler of their life.

On the other hand, the confession 'Jesus is Lord' is a public declaration that Christ is the Lord over
all things, and all peoples. Such a claim implies that there is something distinctive about the person of Christ which makes him different from other religious teachers.
